Christian stewardship of time: faithfulness in the ordinary
The hours are passing. The people before you matter. This day belongs to Him.
Our days are gifts to receive and offer back to God. Stewarding time begins by remembering whose we are and asking how to be faithful with the day before us.
“Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”
Receive your day before trying to master it
A crowded calendar can make every hour feel like something to defend. Begin by pausing before the Lord. Thank Him for the life He has given you. Name the responsibilities and people He has placed before you, and ask for wisdom to meet them with love.
In 1 Corinthians 4, Paul describes servants of Christ and stewards of God's mysteries. Faithfulness is central to that calling. As we consider our own responsibilities, that word gives us a better question than how much we can fit into a day: what would faithfulness to Christ look like here?
Notice where your attention is going
Look honestly at an ordinary day. Consider the moments you choose freely, as well as the demands you cannot simply remove. Notice when a brief distraction becomes an hour of absence from the people or work before you.
Choose one small change. Put the phone away during dinner. Begin a task before opening a feed. Give someone your full attention. The aim is to offer your presence more freely to the work of love that is actually yours to do.
Make room for prayer, work, and rest
Set aside a realistic time to read Scripture and pray. It may be modest in a demanding season. Make it a real appointment with attention, not a measure of how impressive your routine looks.
Do your work with care. Keep the commitments you have made. Leave room to serve and to be interrupted by people who need you. Receive rest as a creature who depends on God. A schedule can support these things, but it cannot tell you the worth of your life. Your hope is in Jesus.
End the day with gratitude and honesty
Before sleep, ask where you received God's kindness, where you acted faithfully, and where you need to confess. Thank Him for what was given. Ask forgiveness where it is needed. Entrust unfinished work to Him and consider one wise step for tomorrow.
We are sojourners here. The passing of time can teach us to hold our plans with humility and our neighbors with greater love. Offer this day to Christ. Then, when morning comes, receive the next one from His hand.
Carry this into today.
- Name one responsibility and one person you want to meet with greater faithfulness today.
- Choose one place to put your phone away and give your attention fully.
- Set aside a realistic time for Scripture, prayer, and an honest end-of-day reflection.
Jesus, these hours belong to You. Teach me to receive them with gratitude and spend them in love. Make me faithful in the ordinary things You have given me. Amen.
